Midwives question use of CO2 monitoring for pregnant women who smoke
June 24, 2010

Commenting on the NICE Guidelines on quitting smoking in pregnancy and following childbirth published today (23 June 2010), Sue Macdonald, Education and Research Manager at the Royal College of Midwives, said: "We welcome these guidelines, because there is no doubt about the negative effects of smoking on the health of women and their babies. Midwives and other health workers should be doing all they can to encourage women to stop smoking. However, this must be in the context of being non-judgemental, non-biased, and being aware that smoking rates amongst the more vulnerable women are often high.

National Stress Awareness Day

November 3, 2009

This year's National Stress Awareness Day (NSAD), organised annually by the International Stress Management Association, will be held on Wednesday 4th November 2009. NSAD, now in its 11th year, aims to help people by highlighting the many coping strategies and sources of help available to people who want to reduce the harmful effects of stress in their lives.

The International Stress Management Association (ISMA) is the leading UK Professional Body in the specialist field of stress management and this year will be working together with Boots, the high-street chemist to deliver a heightened profile for the day and national access to Stress Advisors.

ISMA has created National Stress Awareness Day (NSAD) out of necessity rather than requirement. Stress accounts for over 105 million workdays being lost each year, making it the single biggest cause of sickness absence in the UK. The aim is to increase public awareness through a nationwide campaign about the effects of stress, the treatments available and most importantly to help individuals suffering from stress to seek help using a team of stress experts. NSAD will be providing free drop-in advice and access to Stress Advisors located nationwide in Boots.
